Morning Prayer: Tuesday of 2 Lent- 02 March, 2010

Mar 2nd, 2010 by yvonne

RETURNING TO GOD

O Lord, open our lips:
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen.

PSALMODY

Antiphon: O God, you are my God;*
eagerly I seek you.

Opening - From Psalm 63
My soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you,*
as in a barren and dry land where there is no water.
For your loving-kindness is better than life itself;*
my lips shall give you praise.
For you have been my helper,*
and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice.
My soul clings to you;*
your right hand holds me fast.
Glory to the Father…

Psalm 61
Hear my cry, O God,*
and listen to my prayer.
I call upon you from the ends of the earth
with heaviness in my heart;*
set me upon the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,*
a strong tower against the enemy.
I will dwell in your house for ever;*
I will take refuge under the cover of your wings.
For you, O God, have heard my vows;*
you have granted me the heritage of those
who fear your name.
Add length of days to the king’s life;*
let his years extend over many generations.

Let him sit enthroned before God for ever;*
bid love and faithfulness watch over him.
So will I always sing the praise of your name,*
and day by day I will fulfil my vows.
God of our salvation, when we are depressed and fearful, teach us the way of quiet confidence and hope. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.

Conclusion (from Ezekiel 36)
I will gather you from every country,*
and bring you home to your own land.
I will pour clean water over you,*
and cleanse you from your idols.
A new heart I will give you,*
and put a new spirit within you.
I will take from your body the heart of stone.*
and give you a heart of flesh.
I will put my spirit within you.*
and make you walk in my ways and observe my decrees.
You will live in the land that I gave to your forebears;*
you will be my people and I will be your God.
Glory to the Father…

Antiphon: O God, you are my God;*
eagerly I seek you.

READINGS

Genesis 42: 1-17
When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, ‘Why do you keep looking at one another? I have heard’, he said, ‘that there is grain in Egypt; go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.’ So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he feared that harm might come to him. Thus the sons of Israel were among the other people who came to buy grain, for the famine had reached the land of Canaan.

Now Joseph was governor over the land; it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke harshly to them. ‘Where do you come from?’ he said. They said, ‘From the land of Canaan, to buy food.’ Although Joseph had recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. Joseph also remembered the dreams that he had dreamed about them. He said to them, ‘You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land!’ They said to him, ‘No, my lord; your servants have come to buy food. We are all sons of one man; we are honest men; your servants have never been spies.’ But he said to them, ‘No, you have come to see the nakedness of the land!’ They said, ‘We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of a certain man in the land of Canaan; the youngest, however, is now with our father, and one is no more.’ But Joseph said to them, ‘It is just as I have said to you; you are spies! Here is how you shall be tested: as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here! Let one of you go and bring your brother, while the rest of you remain in prison, in order that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you; or else, as Pharaoh lives, surely you are spies.’ And he put them all together in prison for three days.

1 Corinthians 5: 1-8
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not found even among pagans; for a man is living with his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Should you not rather have mourned, so that he who has done this would have been removed from among you?

For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present I have already pronounced judgement in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing. When you are assembled, and my spirit is present with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

Your boasting is not a good thing. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch, as you really are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Silence

Response (Ps. 6.4)
V. Turn, O Lord, and deliver me.
R. Turn, O Lord, and deliver me.
V. Save me for your mercy’s sake.
R. And deliver me.
V. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
R. Turn, O Lord, and deliver me.

BENEDICTUS

Benedictus Antiphon: If you hear his voice,* harden not your

hearts.

Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel,*
for he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty saviour,*
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old*
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all that hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our forebears,*
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:*
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,*
holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.
You my child shall be called the prophet of the Most High,*
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation*
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God*
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of
death,*
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory be to the Father.

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Collects
God of patience and humility, in your love you gave your Son to be rejected and raised up on a cross. Gather us under its shadow and open our eyes to its mystery, that we may share even now in the life that is from above; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

God most holy, we give you thanks for bringing us out of the shadow of night into the light of morning; and we ask you for the joy of spending this day in your service, so that when evening comes, we may once more give you thanks, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord:
Thanks be to God!

The Lord bless us and preserve us from all evil;
and bring us to life eternal. Amen.
